Desiccators

Quick Overview

The desiccator is a vessel, in which a particular level of air humidity is supported (usually close to zero), made of thick glass. The joint plane within the lid is lubricated with a special lubricant to achieve air tightness. It is used for slow drying at room temperature, storage of hygroscopic compounds; for gravimetry, when it is important not to saturate the substances under study with an undefined amount of water from the air, as well as in soil science to remove the BHP (basic hydro-physical properties) curve. For some purposes, creating vacuum within the desiccator is an option.

The dessicator’s special shape allows positioning a latticed porcelain pallet on which boxes are set up. For drying, water-absorbing salt is placed onto the bottom of the dessicator; or the solution, which supports a particular partial pressure level of evaporated water.
